History
The breed was first described under the name “Entlibucherhund” in the “Schweizerischer Zentralblatt für Jagd- und Hundeliebhaber” in 1889.

There were particularly many in Entlebuch, a valley that extends into the cantons of Lucerne and Bern. That is where it also got its name. The colors that are so typical today were not something that was given much importance from the beginning. The most important thing was that the dogs themselves could earn their living. An Entlebucher Sennenhund would drive and guard livestock during the day and guard its owner at night. In 1913, four specimens of this small driving dog with a stumpy tail were shown at a dog show in Langenthal. Based on the judges’ reports, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog was the fourth Mountain Dog breed to be entered in the Swiss stud book in 1914. The “Klub für Entlebucher Sennenhunde” was formed in 1926 in Switzerland and in 1927 16 dogs were shown at a special show for Mountain Dogs and from that time on the breed’s future was secured. The first standard was established in 1927.

Area of Use

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a livestock guard and herding dog and needs exercise accordingly. It needs to work its brain with different activities, all types of nose work are good; competitive obedience and agility are also appreciated. It requires a lot of activity. If it gets that, it will be a good companion dog and you will avoid all the unkind barking.

Characteristics - Mentality

An Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a small, very lively, barking herding dog, which is alert and nice to its family, but usually very reserved with strangers. It is extremely loyal to its owner and reluctant to leave the family leader. It will happily wait by your side just to be with you.
Being in a kennel or being left alone is no life for an Entlebucher Mountain Dog. It needs a lot of environmental training and social training. It is easy to learn and needs to be properly activated to function well.

Size and Appearance

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of the four Mountain Dog breeds. It is a muscular, fast and agile dog. The height at the withers for males is 44 – 50 cm, and for females 42 – 48 cm. It should have a coat with top hair that is short, close-fitting, hard and shiny. It is tri-colored with a black base color with yellow to rusty brown tooth markings and as symmetrical white markings as possible.

Coat Care

The coat is easy to care for. The dog usually sheds twice a year.

Things to consider if you are interested in the breed

1) Owning and raising an Entlebucher Mountain Dog requires dog training, preferably experience of having had a dog before.

2) The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a lively and alert dog that needs to be allowed to work and do something meaningful. It requires a lot of activity.

3) Given that the breed is usually reserved for strangers, the puppy should meet many people from the beginning under natural conditions so that the behavior does not grow too strong.

4) Belonging to a pack and feeling community with other family members is a great need for this breed. In order to satisfy this, the owner must have the opportunity to be with the dog most of the day. Loneliness quickly leaves its mark in the form of a non-social dog.

5) With its origins as a barking livestock herder, it is easy for it to bark in various situations and is therefore less suitable as an apartment dog.
